Sept. 15, 2022—The Midland-Odessa area of Texas has experienced a mechanic shortage that is impacting repair wait times, much like other areas of the country right now.

According to News West 9, some of these mechanics are opting to leave for jobs with higher wages in the oil industry, while some are choosing to retire entirely. This wave is compounded by the industry parts shortage and results in longer wait times for customers.

Pete Avalos is the Department Chair for the auto diesel and energy program at Midland College, and although he acknowledged the shortage and the supply chain disruptions, he also mentioned an effort at the school that is making a positive impact.

Avalos explained Midland College has partnerships with dealerships and independent repair shops in the area. This helps the college to make connections for students to find jobs after completing school in an effort to address the shortage.
